Two Balis. Most people only ever see one.
The Bali that appears on social media and the Bali that seasoned travellers return to are barely the same island.
The best Bali itineraries split the trip. Inland first — Ubud, Sidemen or the Payangan ridge, where the rooms look into river gorges and the mornings are cool enough for a walk. Then the coast, and specifically the south-western cliffs at Uluwatu or the quieter north-east, rather than the congested strip through Seminyak.
Bali's luxury villa market is enormous and wildly inconsistent. The photographs are almost always beautiful; the road access, the noise, the neighbouring construction and the actual standard of the staff are not in the photographs. That is the part worth having somebody check.

When to go
Every month has its Bali.
- Apr – OctDry season. Lower humidity, reliable sunshine, and the busiest months in July and August.
- Nov – MarWet season with short, heavy afternoon downpours. Greener, quieter and considerably better value.
